About this session: Explore how patriarchy and white supremacy are embedded within nonprofit governance as it relates to selection of leadership and staff, budget authorization, and leveraging personal and professional networks and assets. Learn tools to address patriarchy and white supremacy within board of director governance, including:

  • Equipping directors to engage their personal and professional networks to support the organization
  • Adopting a READI (Racial Justice, Equity, Accessibility, Diversity, Inclusion) lens when hiring executive leadership and supporting staff hires
  • Incorporating knowledge of systemic racism and historical divestment when determining budget priorities

Who Should Participate:  The ideal participants for this session are staff members that work directly with their board of directors (i.e. CEO, executive director, COO), board chair and board executive committee members, etc.

About the Presenter:  Nicole Jeanine Johnson was born and raised on Chicago’s South Side. She is a lifelong champion for equity and Black liberation. Nicole began her career as a third grade Chicago Public School teacher, serving on the West and South Sides. She is a public policy expert, specializing in community development and education policy. She helped to pass progressive ballot access policies, making Illinois the 11th state to adopt automatic voter registration, grace period and same day voter registration. She cut her teeth in Chicago politics and ran a successful campaign for alderman during the 2019 municipal elections. In 2020, Nicole, a gifted story and translator, founded The Aya Group. The Aya Group allows her to take the authentic lived experiences of her community to boardrooms and white spaces, and guide C-Suite executives to  leverage their proximity to power, capital, and influence so that the private sector plays a transformative role in creating a more just and equitable society. She has held audiences with the Kimpton Hotels, Zioness, the Obama Foundation, and the Junto Institute. She holds a Master of Science in education policy from the University of Pennsylvania, a Master of Arts in teaching from National Louis University, and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Michigan.
